Are Hybrids still Hybrids?
|
As club golfers continue to struggle with long Irons the ‘easy to hit’ nature of the Hybrid means that they’re becoming increasingly more popular. This may seem to be a step in the right direction but as Hybrid loft and design options expand this could actually be cause for concern.
While it all began simply, with Hybrid’s replacing those dreaded long Irons, the boundaries between the Hybrid and Fairway Wood now seem to have become blurred, with the latter losing out; and it’s not difficult to understand why. The shorter shaft of a Hybrid makes them easier to control and therefore more accurate than a Fairway Wood, and with Hybrid lofts now reaching as low as 14 degrees it’s easy to see why they’re competing for the same spots in the bag.
Understanding the design characteristics of each club is the key to finding the correct balance for your set makeup.
Whatever your handicap, your swing speed or your club preference there is no reason why Hybrids AND Fairway Woods can’t both find a place in your set. The key is to have a blend that leaves steady distance gaps between clubs and gives you multiple options in numerous scenarios; be it off the tee-box, on the fairway, out of the rough or even around the green.
